Dean
Barley
Executive Director and President
Dean@vineyardcamp.com
L. Dean Barley is the founder of The Vineyard. Dean was born in Lake
Mary, Florida, graduated from Stetson University, DeLand, in 1980 and
received his Master Degree in Divinity, with Languages, from
Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, in 1983, where
he studied as a Brown Scholar. He has received various academic and
community awards including the Governor’s Award for Excellence in North
Carolina. He is a licensed and ordained minister but devotes his time
towards the ministry and vision of The Vineyard.
After working with youth and children while in college and seminary Dean
came to the conclusion that the most effective way of sharing God’s love
and Christ’s call to discipleship was to challenge youth to look beyond
their own ambitions and appetites to the needs, dreams and hopes of
others. He soon discovered that the youth that gave the most during a
summer camp season gained the most joy, peace, and admiration and love
of the others. He followed his heart and instead of preaching in a
church opened his own camp, invited children and youth of all
backgrounds and denominations to learn the joy of serving and loving
others and began developing what he hoped would be the finest sports
camp in America.
Dean had been burdened for years for the work that could be done
internationally in the name of God’s love, but felt that his vision for
a summer camp would prohibit any kind of mission work outside the USA.
But the very first year international campers applied (from Spain) and
soon staff were applying for positions as well. His burden for the
spiritual needs of children and youth all over the world led him to not
only accept international teenagers and children, but to also travel
extensively all over the world speaking about benefit of summer camping,
recruiting foreign staff, sharing the camp with international parents
and children, and encouraging/ counseling these campers and staff.
Several years ago he contacted the U.S. State Department to seek (and
subsequently receive) status as “Sponsoring Agency of the Department of
State”. He is now able to interview and hire international staff from
any country in the world and provide the required documentation for
international work visas.
Dean resides near the camp property on Brown Mountain and continues to
serve as the camp’s Executive Director and President of the Corporation.

Debbie Farson
Food Services
Debbie@vineyardcamp.com
Debbie Farson joined our resident
staff in the spring of 2005. Debbie first heard of the camp through a
board member and supporter, George Barley, who is also a brother to the
camp’s founder and her father. After her first visit she fell in love
with the camp and was invited to join the resident staff.
Debbie lives at the camp (the “Boat House”) with her pets (two dogs and
a turtle presently). She also has a grown son, Chris, who still lives in
Debbie’s home state of Florida.
Although she came to the camp with the idea of being a help with
operations and the Food Service Program, she soon found out that she was
the real one being helped as she received comfort and encouragement from
the staff and campers.
She considers herself now a part of the “soup” that makes the camp so
special to so many people. Debbie calls The Vineyard her home and hopes
that God will continue to teach her how to better glorify Him in all
that she does.
