“What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?
You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them<d>d> with glory and honor.” Psalm 8:4-5
It’s a great question! And within the answer are the existential answers to what has bothered all of us since man from the very beginning. All of us wonder about why we are here, what it is that will really satisfy us, what will happen to us when we die, if we are merely creations (or is something about us quite special and unique to our Creator) and why He made us in the first place.
Why does He care?! Why did He call us into existence? Why did He make “me” as He did? I am not able to properly answer all these questions, but I have come to a place of peace knowing this: I AM more than a mere creation. Obviously when God “breathed life” into man and when He determined to create me “in His image”, something was given to me that was not given to other creatures. Somehow I became the object of His incredible love—-a love so outstanding that He intervenes in my life and throughout the history of mankind to keep me from falling off the edge! While He could have simply wiped all us out and started a new, better kind of creature, he’s determined that we will one day become His Sons and Daughters—-in fact, because of the Christ’s sacrifice for you and me on Golgotha, we have become redeemed through Jesus Christ and are children of God now!
So here’s what I have come to believe: I am special…He loves me…..He does not want to lose me…..I am important and unique to Him. This is what fuels me when I am down, dejected or unsure of tomorrow. Others might scoff at my abilities or ambitions; some may question my motives or my heart, but God has called me His own and sees something within me worth redeeming and calling His own. I have value and am special because God says so. Nothing adds such vigor or gives me strength more than that assurance. And when the enemy whispers to me at night that I am nothing more than a creature, I remind Him that my Creator says that I am far more important and valuable—He knows my name and has a plan for me!
A man or woman finds peace in the most penetrating and haunting questions of life when he or she realizes that it is in God, and God alone, that the answers can be found.
